McDonalds charging a “dine-in tax”
Posted on Friday, January 12, 2007 in Business News, Consumer Tips
I heard a rumor that McDonalds charges a dine-in tax to its customers who eat in the restaurant. I had to see for myself, so I called four McDonalds in four different states and asked them about it. To my surprise every one of them confirmed they did have such a charge.
I try not to eat at McDonalds as much as possible because of health reasons but I am anxious to see if anyone out there has a receipt from their dine-in experience. I would love to see what they are actually calling this alleged tax. I am not even sure they can call it a tax unless the U.S. Government is actually levying this tax. If any of my readers have any information on this please comment.

It’s a sales tax, which is charged on restaurant meals, but not groceries, in many states.
When the food is taken to go, I guess it’s considered groceries.

A Northern Ky McDonalds also charges a eat in AND a take out tax. Does anyone know whether this is state or federal levy? Seems illegal for it just to be a McDonalds tax.

I am in Georgia and noticed this “tax” for the first time this morning at breakfast. I will be eating elsewhere from now on. I understand that if you try to avoid it by ordering take-out, they then call it a take-out tax. This is a McDonalds thing, not a valid tax.

I have contacted state officials in Ky and they stated the tax must be a local tax because it wasn’t a state tax. I contacted local and they stated it was a state tax. Really confused on who is collecting this so called tax.

I just noticed this at the McDonalds in Tonawanda, NY (Buffalo area). I got a large coke and a breakfast sandwich and they charged 32cents as a “dine-in tax”. Taco Bell, however, did not charge such a thing.

not only does mcdonalds have a dine in tax, they also have a take out tax. my husband and i have frequented mcdonalds once a week and just the other day we took our grandaughter there, bought three happymeals, and notice on the recipt, it had a .57 eat in tax. a few days later we once again took our grand daughter, bought a #1 and two happy meals, to go and went to the park. then i noticed a .92 cent take out charge. the tax goes by how much you spend. unbelivable. we never noticed it before now. i wonder how many people actually look at their recipts?

The take in tax and the take out tax are the same. It’s just how they know where to put your food, in a bag or on a tray.

every mcdonalds in the united states charges this tax…so do other competitoirs.(i work at a mcdonalds and have worked at other restaurants) the tax is used to pay for paper to wrap the burgers and boxes. it is alos used to pay the employess however they dont charge for take out. the general idea is if they dont make a mess we dont have to pay anyone to clean it…
