How to soothe a sun burn

Summer TipsIts summer time and if your fair skinned its sun burn time too. Take a old tube sock or equivalent and fill it with oatmeal (Not Instant). Fill up your bathtub with water (should be comfortably warm) . Place the sock with the oatmeal in the water and submerge it. After soaking for 30 – 40 minutes rinse with cool water.

Oatmeal: The oats soothes itching, Beard says. Make an oatmeal mask and let it sit on your face for five minutes if you have a little sunburn or sunkissed face. Then rinse with cold water. Beard says the process takes away the flushed look, and it is perfect for when you’re uncomfortable from the sun.

That same remedy also helps with sciatica and other things having to do with the nervous system.

Before you go stuffing your socks with oatmeal try this simpler, less messy sunburn remedy… A cool milk compress has the same soothing effect. I learned this while I was growing up in Florida. Simply moisten a clean cloth or paper towel with whole milk or buttermilk and apply to the affected area for 15-20 mins repeating every few hours then rinse off. This has spared me from pain and discomfort several times. Save the oatmeal for breakfast. =)

Asprin or ibuprofen, ingested as soon as possible - even before - over-exposure to the sun. Works by blocking prostaglandin release. See eMedicine - Sunburn : Article by James Foster, MD, MS.

Avoid if sensitive, allergic, or otherwise contraindicated, of course.

I also recommend using pure aloe vera - it soothes the burning immediately.
